Homeless chic werd populair in de jaren ‘80 en komt, zoals de meeste trends, elke twintig jaar weer terug. Deze controversiële modetrend bestaat uit high-end aanpassingen van versleten kleding - een chique aanpassing van traumatische omstandigheden. Het is een vreemde trend die de armsten in onze samenleving verheerlijkt om de rijken aan te spreken. Homeless chic werd opnieuw populair aan het eind van de jaren ‘10 en lijkt op de kleding die veel daklozen op straat dragen. Wat daklozen dragen is vaak praktisch, beschikbaar, betaalbaar en comfortabel, terwijl degenen die dezelfde kleding dragen voor homeless chic dit doen omwille van ijdelheid en klasse status - deze kledingstijl is namelijk vaak ontzettend duur.
