The black mermaid

The black mermaid

When the Disney studios announced that they had cast Halle Bailey in the role of Ariel, aka The Little Mermaid, for their latest live-action remake, there was a wave of reactions and most of all: criticism. Twitter hashtags #NotMyMermaid and #NotMyAriel became trending topics and Halle was ridiculed

A very reverent Alice

A very reverent Alice

Alice in Wonderland is one of the most variedly illustrated stories ever, and yet artists over the past 150 years have limited themselves in strange ways when re-imagining this classic. Last year, I made a call for African, African American, or otherwise non-European-looking Alices in Wonderland on

'But they can easily fly to the Netherlands'

Queeristan 2010 - english version

You won’t find it in Google Maps and googling about the old way will not get you near it, but Queeristan really does exist. Last weekend it fitted inside the walls of an Amsterdam squat and was described as a weekend of discussion about queer politics, a Queer Pride March and a queer party. LOVER was there: one of our editors served a panel discussion, her alter ego did a performance, a LOVER ambassador presented the saturday afternoon and LOVER’s web-editor watched it all to present you with an impression.
