Hebben we hier al gehoord van de ‘Hobby Lobby’? Of is dat ons land ontgaan in al het voetbalgeweld en tumult rondom de rechterlijke uitspraak over Zwarte Piet? In het kort: onder de Hobby Lobby wordt de uitspraak van het Amerikaanse Hooggerechtshof verstaan waarin bedrijven wordt toegestaan om, uit religieuze gronden, vergoeding van anticonceptie aan hun vrouwelijke werknemers te weigeren. Nog korter: volgens de Amerikaanse Hoge Rechters zijn bedrijven mensen, vrouwen niet, en dus hebben ze minder rechten dan bedrijven. Veel tegenstanders van de Hobby Lobby voelen zich daardoor gedwongen om anticonceptie voor gezondheidsredenen in hun argumentatie op te nemen. Maar eigenlijk is het tragisch, zegt Jessica Valente – oprichtster van Feministing.com en vaste Guardian-columniste – dat anno 2014 en terwijl 99 procent van de Amerikaanse vrouwen anticonceptiemiddelen gebruikt vrouwen nóg moeten verdoezelen dat ze van seks houden. ‘And when female reporters covered the Hobby Lobby decision, it was not a coincidence that the majority of us were being called sluts and whores across social media and elsewhere. To conservatives, contraception is not about health – it's about sex, their fear of sex, and a panic over women having sex that doesn't lead to babies. The more we ignore that truth – or focus on on the "valid" reasons women use birth control – the more women give ammunition, and give up the moral ground, to the right. Liberals concede the same ground when we make pro-choice arguments using the most extreme examples – rape, incest and health. Yes, women need abortions for those reasons – but they also need them when they're simply not ready to be parents. And that's OK.’ – Jessica Valente
